Alex Hankins has opened Haole Hawaiian Grindz in CO.A.T.I. Uprise foods corridor, 514 S. Tejon St. Haole (pronounced HOW-lee) is slang for island outsiders, and grindz refers to Hawaiian road meals.
The dishes I observed passed over the counter ended up much better hunting and tasting than what you’d expect from street meals. The coconut panko shrimp delivered four awesome-sized, plump crustaceans fried to a golden brown, served on a mattress of shredded cabbage with a scoop of macaroni salad, a scoop of steamed rice and the selected aspect of cucumber salad. The shrimp were perfectly cooked, good and juicy. The pasta salad was delectable, but the side of cukes was excellent, with tangy vinegar and lots of garlic. I’d go back again for the flavorful salad on your own.
The menu has the usual plate-lunch specials like katsu hen, loco moco, Huli Huli hen, pineapple Shoyu pork ribs and a combo plate. Go to: facebook.com/haolehawaiiangrindz
